Walking into Penner’s, the iconic men’s clothing store on Commerce Street on the western edge of downtown, is like taking a step back into the 1960s.
Oldies by everyone from the Beatles to Stevie Wonder hum over the intercom. Fedoras from a bygone era of men’s fashion are stacked neatly on a rack near the checkout counter.
And then there are the guayaberas and trademark “tangerine” orange shoes, the two products of the past for which Penner’s is most well-known.
The business, which celebrates its centennial this year, is steeped in tradition and history, its walls bedecked with glass frames with newspaper clippings of stories about the store from across the country and large black and white photos of past owners dated from the early 1900s.
